The British Standard 6465-1: 2006 sets out the “minimum provision of sanitary appliances for restaurants and other places where seating is provided for eating and drinking”. It is used by Building Control officers where premises are being altered or are new build and require Building Regulation Approval.

Where appropriate, the standard allows for the staff facilities to be shared with customers providing that staff welfare and food hygiene requirements are not compromised.

The Environmental Health (Public Health Department) regulate the welfare facilities in public houses, night clubs and restaurants. They have published a standard – “Toilet Requirements for Licensed Premises and Places of Refreshment” which applies to all new or substantially altered premises after 1st March 1995. The requirements of this standard include that toilet facilities must be reasonably accessible and not more than one floor distant and not open directly off a room where food or drink is prepared or consumed. There is also a requirement for adequate lighting and ventilation. All approach doors should have self closing devices on them. All wash basins shall be provided with a hot and cold water supply.
