Tran & Associates, an IP boutique law firm in Santa Clara, California, is pleased to announce the issuance of U.S. Patent No. 10335897 on July 2, 2019 entitled “Laser Ablation of Accelerometer Proof Mass” to Applied Physics System.
Applied Physics Systems has developed a new method of fabricating quartz hinge accelerometers. Traditionally the quartz hinge is formed by wet etching the accelerometer proof mass in dilute hydrochloric acid. This method is slow and difficult to control, a problem solved by the newly issued patent.
Dr. William Goodman, Founder and President of Applied Physics, noted that “Tran & Associates’ hard work, comprehensive knowledge, and commitment have resulted in our new patent covering the use of a fempto laser to form the quartz hinge. The very short pulse width of the fempto laser enables rapid and highly controllable ablation of the quartz hinge while at the same time minimizing damage to the hinge understructure. This in turn enables production of an accelerometer with highly predictable and uniform characteristics.”
“We are confident that our knowledge and experience will be an asset to our client’s business,” said patent attorney Bao Tran, who has helped individuals and companies protect their innovations since 1993. “Our firm has decades of experience helping businesses and individuals safeguard the resources, money, and time in developing their inventions, and our goal is to surpass our clients’ expectations.”
