Beware of Mosquito Infestations Following Floods, Company Warns

Leading Retractable Insect Screen Manufacturer Warns Residents of South East Queensland to Protect Their Homes from Mosquitoes Following Heavy Rainfall.

Brisbane-based retractable screening company, Intelliscreens, today issued a warning to residents of South East Queensland to prepare for the barrage of mosquitoes associated with recent heavy rainfall and high temperatures, by safeguarding their homes with retractable screen doors.

Mosquitoes thrive in wet and hot conditions, so following the extreme weather being experienced in many parts of Queensland, residents of the state are being warned to protect themselves against mosquito bites as insect populations rise.

In the past, floods have preceded explosions in mosquito populations in Australia as well as subsequent outbreaks of mosquito borne diseases. Stagnant water from floods and forecasted high temperatures, provide the ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed.

Mosquitoes are responsible for the spread of diseases such as Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus disease and Australian Arboencephalitis. Ross River virus is the most prevalent and affects 5000 Australians each year.

Symptoms associated with these infections range from mild to severe including,

· rashes on the limbs and body

· headaches and fatigue

· joint pain and swelling

Kevin Burnside, Intelliscreens managing director urged residents of South East Queensland to protect their families from mosquito infestations by dealing with any stagnant water around their properties and having their homes fitted with retractable screen doors.

He warned: “Retractable screens are an effective, eco-friendly way of ensuring the inevitable increase in mosquitoes, which occurs within a week after heavy rainfalls, don’t endanger your family”.

Combined with the forecasted high temperatures, expected to reach above 40 degrees over the coming weeks, the stagnant water left by heavy rainfall provide breeding grounds for potentially disease-carry mosquitoes.

Mr Burnside explained that installing retractable fly screens allows you to keep your doors open, cooling your home without the fear of being bitten by mosquitoes. He also urged residents to act quickly following the floods,

“Mosquitoes lay their eggs in leftover rainwater which may be pooled around your property, in trash can lids, gutters, puddles and so on. The larvae hatch and grow into adults, in these stagnant pools of rainwater. Over a few days, mosquitoes lay their eggs, the eggs hatch and develop into adults. Female adult mosquitoes bite because they need the nutrients in blood for their larvae. That is why the days following a flood are so important in stopping mosquito infestations and why it’s important that all doors are covered with retractable insect screens”, Mr Burnside said.
