As the temperatures drop and with more residents working from and studying at home, Celestial Air HVAC would like to provide residents with safety tips for heating homes and staying warm this winter.

Working or schooling at home has become commonplace in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Spaces that previously had received little or no use during the day are now full-time offices and classrooms. With these dual uses come the responsibility to keep spaces warmed to a comfortable temperature.
As home heating sources have the potential to create fire and electrical hazards, Celestial Air recommends that residents take some time to educate themselves about the best home heating safety practices. Residents should be aware of which home heating devices are safe, which to reject, and how to safely care for and service them.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. Fire Protection Association (USFPA) , and Celestial Air warn homeowners that half of all home fires occur in December, January and February. Home heating appliances account for 1 in 7 of these fires.
In order to keep residents warm and safe, Celestial Air shares the following tips from the NFPA to help prevent heating related home fires:
• Install and then test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly.
• Keep combustible items such as draperies, upholstery and clothing away from furnaces, space heaters, wood stoves and fireplaces.
• Create a safe zone for children of at least 3 feet around heating appliances.
• Do not use ovens or outdoor cooking appliances to heat your home.
• Make sure your furnace and fireplace are checked and cleaned once a year.
• Install a screen in front of fireplaces to prevent sparks from escaping into the room.
• Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or at night when unattended.
• If you smell gas, do not turn a gas fueled appliance on.
