Recently, Pillir, a low-code/no-code, cloud-native platform that allows enterprises to create mission-critical applications 20 times quicker than conventional approaches, wrote a blog article that covered all of the areas of ABAP code repair and modernisation in comparison to ABAP migration.
Some users may be unfamiliar with the concept of ABAP code remediation; yet, it is not impossible. Whenever SAP customers update their organisations by moving to the newest and best from SAP, namely S/4HANA, the issue of “ABAP code remediation” is often brought to the forefront of the conversation. Although it is undeniable that businesses must migrate their mission-critical custom applications to their new environment, is it really the most efficient use of effort, time, resources, and money to remediate an entire business’s ABAP customizations in order to make it work exactly the same way in S/4HANA as it did in SAP ECC during a S/4HANA migration? Pillir suggests that businesses go a bit more into the subject of ABAP code cleanup and the options available to them.
Technically speaking, ABAP code remediation simply refers to the process of converting an application that was previously functional on an organization’s old system to operate on their new system. There is no distinction between the inputs and outputs, and users do not see any change in what the programme performs or how it supports their workflows.
ABAP code running on a legacy ERP system (SAP ECC) will be examined by a development team in order to make it operate in SAP S/4HANA or other environments. While ABAP code remediation may suit an organization’s immediate requirements by allowing its teams to continue to use the bespoke applications they need, remediation does not enhance the company; instead, it is wasteful and just serves to preserve the status quo for the organisation. It will take time and resources for developers to rectify the situation, but when they are finished and successful, business users will have precisely the same experience that they had previously.
Remediation of ABAP code is analogous to moving into a new house while keeping all of the current appliances and furnishings from the previous one. However, if the whole cost of relocating, including the time and effort, exceeds the real cost of new appliances and furnishings, would it be worthwhile to relocate everything? While moving certain key items may be a possibility, moving everything is not recommended if there is an alternative that is less expensive, time-consuming, and financially rewarding (e.g. buying new stuff). Isn’t it preferable to relocate what is absolutely necessary and cannot be replaced while purchasing new, more contemporary equipment and furnishings at a lower cost?
In a similar vein, ABAP modernization enables enterprises to migrate just what is absolutely essential to a new SAP environment while leaving behind anything else that does not make sense from a labour and cost standpoint.
Pillir provides businesses with the tools they need to overcome the issues that SAP users experience when it comes to ABAP code remediation.
