West Seneca, N.Y. (Dec. 16, 2019) – SynchroNet Industries has affirmed their commitment to education through the launch of a new video blog channel, SyncroNews Online, found at https://vimeo.com/channels/synchronet. The goal for this channel is to provide no-cost, high-energy training on specific IT issues to SynchroNet customers, members of the Western New York community, as well as anyone interested in the topics covered. Jerry Sheehan, President and CEO of SynchroNet says, “We need to get the user to understand the WHY – ‘Why are there standards in place? Why would someone want to hack me?’ People think they don’t have anything worth hacking, but that’s never true. If we can better educate them on the Why behind all the advice they receive, they’ll have a better appreciation for the value of protecting themselves as well as for the process we implement when the businesses where they work join us on The SynchroNet Way.”
In its inaugural training video, the first in a three-part series entitled Skip the Hack, SynchroNet addressed a high impact topic: Passwords. SynchroNet, in its work with hundreds of organizations throughout the WNY area, sees the same issues again and again – outdated passwords, passwords that are too easy to break, passwords that are reused across dozens of logins … and how such practices put consumers at risk.
In video two of the Skip the Hack series, viewers learn specific steps they can take to craft more secure passwords and how they can better secure their online information by using a vetted password vault application. In the final video of the series, viewers are encouraged to take the momentum of their password refresh and make changes to how they operate online, checking their apps, browser extensions, double-checking if they are using secure URLs, and more. All three videos feature humor and a few gags, intended to make viewers laugh. SynchroNet believes the entertained viewer is the viewer that will take the next step.
Lisa Fatolitis, SynchroNet’s Marketing Director and the voice-over artist behind the videos, reports, “I asked one of our test viewers for specific feedback after she watched the full series. The viewer replied, ‘I need to go change my passwords!’ That’s a win for SynchroNews and for the Skip the Hack series. The more people who know how to thwart cyber criminals, the better. This is a grassroots effort because the ISOC reported in 2018 that 95% of all security breaches were preventable. That tells me that we can do the most good by educating people at the user level while our business model – IT management – addresses issues at the corporate level.”
SynchroNet will add at least one video per month to SyncroNews Online. Jerry Sheehan explains, “We’re picking real-life topics that plague real-life businesses. Then we’re prioritizing those topics based on questions we’ve heard from executives and management teams. There’s a lot of press right now regarding cyber security but few individuals know what that means for them, their personal information, or their businesses. We wanted to help people design a personal plan that includes step-by-step guidance so that they can move beyond the headlines and into an action plan.”
Future segments will address topics like:
· 23 NYCRR 500
· NYS New Data Protection Requirements
· GDPR
· Productivity
· IT leadership
· Phishing and spear phishing
· And more
