Akron Family Fights for Justice Against A Local Nursing Home After Her Death

The family of Glennie Hood claims the nursing home failed to properly prevent pressure sores, one of which became severely infected which led to Glennie’s death, reports tittlelawfirm.com.

An elderly woman from Akron has died and now her children are asking questions about the quality of care she received from her nursing home. The family members allege that as a result of her doctor and nursing home’s failure to prevent and treat pressure sores, one on her heel became infected after going untreated for far too long. A lawsuit filed by Glennie’s family against local nursing home facility Essex of Tallmadge and some of its caregivers, including Dr. Lisa Esterle, claims the infection “ultimately took her life.”

According to her family members, Glennie was a good mom who was always there not only for her children, but also for other kids in the neighborhood. “She’d have the porch lined up with kids, having us wondering what was going on. Some of the little kids even called her grandma,” said Michael Hood, Glennie’s son.

Glennie was full of youth but over time, her children noticed dementia setting in. Michael, along with Glennie’s daughter Yvonne Dragg, shared memories of having to look for Glennie when she’d taken off on the city bus or had wandered off down the road in the rain. They knew then that it was time to do something about her situation. Michael and his siblings decided that a nursing home would be best for their mother and eventually settled on Essex of Tallmadge just minutes away from where she lived. After getting a tour from a staff member, Michael recalls the guide telling him, “She’ll be safe and watched over and taken care of here.”

That’s what the family was promised, but it isn’t what they got.

Glennie’s problem started small when a nurse told Michael she had a blister. Over time, things got worse. The blister developed a strong odor, despite nursing home employees telling them it was healing. The Nursing Home eve kept Glennie’s foot wrapped in gauze and reportedly refused to let the family see the wound. Then, one day in April of 2016, Michael said Glennie was really not feeling well, and the nursing home sent her to Akron General Hospital. After examination by a medical team, a doctor informed the family the wound was too far gone.

“Glennie went through a lot, and it wasn’t fair,” said Marlene Davis, Glennie’s daughter.

Represented by nursing home neglect lawyer Allen Tittle of Tittle & Perlmuter in Cleveland, Ohio, the family claims that Essex allowed Glennie’s blister to become infected and eventually turn black until the flesh was rotting off of her foot. However, attorney Leslie Jenny, who represents Essex, said they don’t agree. According to Jenny, it’s too early in the investigation to know. David Best, who works in Akron and represents Dr. Esterle, said the claim is preposterous and that there’s no medical correlation between Glennie’s infection and her death.

In a case not correlated to the Hood family’s claims, “5 On Your Side” investigators reported Essex was fined more than $58,000 by the state of Ohio between 2014 and 2016. The state reported one time Essex “failed to provide necessary care” for a person with “critically high blood glucose levels” who then died.

This time around, there are new allegations from Glennie’s family. According to Attorney Allen Tittle, “All they wanted and all they expected was their mother to have safe care and live with dignity.”

“I loved my mom and think about her all the time. We went through a lot watching her” said Yvonne Dragg. Marlene Davis and Michael Hood often reminisce about how Glennie was the pillar of their family whom everyone, especially her grandkids, looked up to. “She was everything to us,” Hood said.

Attorney Tittle said he hopes lawsuits like this will help stop the practice of putting profits over patients in nursing homes. The Hood family’s case is ongoing.
