May 23, 2023, In today’s increasingly complex business landscape, companies must regularly evaluate their priorities and be receptive to adopting new ones. In recent years, many forward-thinking businesses have embraced a sustainability focus. This paradigm shift is reflected in virtually every phase of companies’ operations.
The multinational Keter, a respected leader in the consumer lifestyle solutions arena, has integrated sustainability into each innovative product. The company’s manufacturing operations reflect this critical priority. Keter’s 2021 sustainability achievements clearly set the stage for its ambitious 2025 goals.
“We are a business driven by innovation, and a leading company in our industry,” Keter CEO Alejandro Pena declared. “We lead by example and live by the values of being good to the environment as well as to our communities. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because I also believe that it will be a source of competitive advantage over the long term.”
Businesses Should Integrate Sustainability Into Operations
Enterprises that adopt an integrated sustainability focus can reap some surprising benefits. With a unified approach and universal commitment toward sustainability goals, businesses are well positioned for success — here’s how.
One obvious benefit is decreased materials waste. By reducing and/or reusing materials, a company can decrease its operations’ environmental impact. Using recycled materials in manufactured products has a significant effect, reducing overall landfill waste.
Sustainable business operations can also reduce a company’s longer-term expenses. Businesses that use more efficient HVAC systems, improved insulation, and energy-efficient lighting see concrete benefits. The systems and materials will initially cost more but will result in savings over time.
Acknowledging sustainability can produce a competitive advantage. Over half of U.S. consumers would rather obtain goods and services from businesses that make energy-efficient products and use sustainable manufacturing practices.
These strategies are indeed working for the Keter team. Said Alejandro Pena, “ The impact has been very positive both internally and externally. Internally, it gives our employees something to be very proud of. Knowing that they’re working for a company that cares is important to our team.
“Externally, it has really elevated our status with our largest, most important retailers. They are also looking for ways to meet either the requirements of the communities in which they operate or their requirements from their investors, their lenders, their shareholders to become more and more sustainable.”
Keter’s Proven Consumer Lifestyle Solutions Leadership
Keter is known for its global leadership in the consumer lifestyle products sector. The company designs, builds, and markets durable resin-based indoor and outdoor products.
Designed for everyday consumer use, Keter’s product line includes sturdy sheds, versatile storage solutions, and tool storage systems. Outdoor furniture, outdoor entertainment products, and stand-alone garden beds round out the company’s offerings. The company’s Curver brand also includes products intended for inside the home, including decorative and functional storage, trash, food and kitchen organization, laundry, and pet products.
Under Keter CEO Alejandro Pena’s leadership, the company has integrated sustainability into every aspect of the company’s operations. Pena embraces Keter’s mission to minimize the use of virgin resources in product manufacturing operations and advocates for the elimination of waste throughout the value chain.
Specifically, Keter’s consumer lifestyle products are fabricated from recycled materials and completely recyclable, reducing the environmental impact. In addition, the company’s manufacturing facilities are steadily reducing their residual waste.
CEO Alejandro Pena Presents Key Components of the Keter Sustainability Report: 2021
Each year, Keter publishes its annual sustainability report detailing the company’s progress on sustainable issues during the previous year. The Keter 2021 Sustainability Report acknowledged the challenges the organization faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, the company continued to expand while refining its corporate brand identity.
“In 2021, we celebrated the acquisition of Casual Living Unlimited and its sister company Trigon Plastics. The former enabled us to expand our portfolio and presence in the U.S. outdoor furniture market. The latter offered a platform for the collection of postconsumer waste and the production of recyclates as an in-house source of raw materials for our products.
“In tandem with our business growth, we continued to drive forward new ways of innovating. We launched more than 100 new sustainably made products,” Alejandro Pena wrote in a letter to stakeholders.
He emphasized that Keter’s 2021 achievements were guided by the company’s ongoing sustainability pledge. “The Keter Everyday Sustainability Pledge continued to influence our daily operations. Last year, we made significant progress in taking carbon out of our manufacturing processes by maintaining our use of recycled resin and driving efficiencies throughout our operations.”
In 2023, Keter continues to focus on sustainable production. The company has outlined five measurable goals it plans to reach by 2025, starting with total production that includes 55% of recycled content; a continued ban on the production of single-use plastic consumer items; a 25% decrease in production-related greenhouse gas emissions; production that results in zero waste for landfills; and companywide adoption of product end-of-life programs.
The Keter three-part sustainability initiative contains multiple goals the company intends to realize by 2025. Specifically, more sustainable production techniques will lead to a better planet.
Keter’s forward-thinking products enhance consumers’ lifestyles while promoting a circular economy. Keter products are fabricated from recycled content and are recyclable after use. In 2025, 30% of product sales will result from new product innovations.
Snapshot of Keter’s 2021 Sustainability Achievements
In 2021, Keter made measurable progress toward its 2025 sustainability goals. The company marked significant achievements in three key areas.
In 2021, Keter acquired Casual Living Unlimited LLC, which expanded the acquirer’s United States market potential. The year’s acquisition of Trigon Plastics LLC enabled Keter to improve its in-house recycling operations and provide raw materials for products.
In 2021, Keter debuted 70 products and filed 52 patent applications. The company used 39.4% recycled materials in its overall manufacturing programs.
Keter also reached four significant milestones in its clean production goals. First, three manufacturing plants sent absolutely no waste to local landfills. Second, overall, company facilities sent just 13% of their waste to the landfill compared with 23% in 2020. Third, in 2022, Keter realized an 11% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per output ton in 2021 compared with 2020. And fourth, the company brought two new solar arrays online in 2022, providing much-needed power for its European factories.
Alejandro Pena Spearheads Keter’s Two Key Priorities
As Keter continues to focus on its future, CEO Alejandro Pena keeps two equally important priorities at the forefront. First, he promotes the design and production of innovative consumer lifestyle solutions. Keter’s quality products are a natural fit for home, indoor and outdoor storage, and gardening applications.
At the same time, Keter emphasizes sustainable manufacturing that uses recycled materials and the latest technologies. Together, the company’s products and operations enable it to remain a driving force toward sustainability.
Says Pena, “Keter will continue to be the most innovative company in the industry. Keter will be the most sustainable company and a leader in our industry. And Keter will be an omnichannel-focused, product-centric company where we will serve our customers and consumers wherever they are, whenever they want, in every possible way that they want.”
