On June 14, 2004, Wise Choice Summer Camp started its very first week with 7 campers at a location in Kendall. Today, the camp accepts about 350 campers aged 5-14 at its two locations over the course of a single summer, marking the success of the camp’s unique structure.
For camp owner and former teacher Daniel Yanes, education was one of the essentials he wanted to bring into the camp environment. Every week, campers at Wise Choice Summer Camp write a mini report and practice their public speaking skills by presenting on their chosen topic. Daniel notes that the rare experience of challenging their fears and presenting on a meaningful subject leaves the kids glowing with pride and confidence at the end of each week.
While public speaking practice is one unique aspect of this summer camp in Miami, it’s far from the only attraction. Variety is the name of the game at Wise Choice Summer Camp, and that starts with a wide assortment of physical activities, and a field trip each week. Three times a week, campers get to choose from many fun electives like art, dance, fitness, chess, taekwondo, and video games.
What’s the reason for the camp’s success? One might say that Wise Choice Summer Camp has struck upon the perfect balance of structure and choice, education and play. It is perhaps that balance – along with strong role models and the companionship of their peers – that has led to the summer camp’s success as a trusted place for parents to bring their children to learn, grow, and have fun each summer.
Campers meet at the University of Miami and Florida International University with camp counselors and other children their age ready to tackle the day’s activities. Every week, kids are kept busy with many exciting activities, including movies, swimming, outdoor games like kickball, soccer, football, basketball, and dodgeball, weekly field trips, and mini reports with presentations. Plus, they’re given the flexibility to follow their own interests, choosing from several mini-electives three days a week.
Art, dancing, fitness, taekwondo, chess, and video games are some of the fun-filled options that campers enjoy at Wise Choice Summer Camp. The last day each week at Wise Choice Summer Camp is a special one, starting with confidence-boosting educational presentations to their peers. The week ends on a high note, with a party that includes games, karaoke, dancing, talent shows, field days, and other favorite activities – but the friendships, confidence, and healthy habits formed at camp can last a lifetime.
