Hydro cyclone is an equipment which uses the centrifugal process to separate some particles or drops from the liquid fluid. These particles shall have a different density to be separated by this pressure process. The process that happens in the hydrocyclone is cyclonic, i.e., it moves circularly when allowed to flow inside a cylindrical chamber of the hydro cyclone equipment. It is used to separate particles such as fiber and starch separation. The equipment has an inlet and outlet.
The outlet at the cylindrical part is called the vortex, and the conical end of the equipment is also referred to as the spigot, where there is another outlet — the hydro cyclone functions in a vertical manner. The spigot is at the lower end, and the vortex is at the upper end. Thus, the flow happens at both the end, i.e., at the conical as well as the cylindrical end. There is also a feed inlet. Thus, when the material exits from the spigot, it is called underflow, and when it segregates out from the upper end, it is called overflow.

The operation of the hydrocyclone is simple. The liquid material which carries materials with different density is injected into the chamber of the hydro cyclone through the inlet and the same spirals downwards, and due to the centrifugal force, it moves cylindrically. Large particles exit through the spigot in a cyclonic motion and as there is a limited area at the exit end of spigot, an inner vortex, which rotates move out through outer side flowing upward through the vortex. It carries the fluid with finer particles. Operating pressure and diameter of the hydrocyclone can be changed for segregating different type of fluid with different concentration of suspended particles into it.
