Vein Health Clinics Treats Male Infertility Problems Resulting From Varicoceles

Winter Haven, FLORIDA (May 7, 2020) — Vein Health Clinics is happy to announce that it has begun treating male infertility problems caused by varicoceles, a condition that sometimes leads to low sperm production and a reduction in sperm quality which, in turn, can cause infertility.

Varicoceles affect the veins called the pampiniform plexus located inside the sac that holds the testicles, and are quite similar to varicose veins found on the legs. A varicocele is formed when the blood being transported by the veins doesn’t move along as it should. The blood gradually starts to pool in the vein, leading to vein enlargement.

Although varicoceles are not commonly known, they actually affect 15 percent of adult males and approximately 20 percent of adolescent males. They are more common among males aged 15 to 25.

Unfortunately, there are no clear-cut risk factors as to who can develop a varicocele as the exact cause itself is unclear.

However, there are symptoms that one can look out for. These include:

A lump in either testicle

Swelling in the scrotum

Twisted or enlarged veins in the scrotum

A dull, recurring pain in the scrotal area

Studies have shown that varicoceles are present in 35 to 44 percent of men diagnosed to have primary infertility, and in 45 to 81 percent of men diagnosed with secondary infertility. Primary infertility pertains to couples who haven’t conceived after a year of trying. Secondary infertility refers to couples who have successfully conceived once, but are unable to after.

Varicoceles aren’t always conspicuous, and may not be seen or felt when lying down. The doctor would examine the testicles to determine the condition. The doctor may also conduct a scrotal ultrasound to get a more precise assessment of the condition, and to measure the spermatic veins.

After a diagnosis is made, the doctor uses a clinical grading system based on the size of the lump in the testicle, with grade 1 being the smallest and grade 3, the largest. This grading system helps physicians decide if treatment is necessary. However, it must be noted that the kind of treatment administered would be based on the patient’s level of discomfort and any infertility issues he may have, not on the size of the lump.

Since a varicocele can affect testicular functioning in some individuals, the earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better. Depending on certain conditions, varicocele treatment options include varicocelectomy and varicocele embolization.

A varicocelectomy is a type of same-day surgery where the physician clamps or ties off the abnormal veins. This procedure needs to be performed by a urologist in a hospital setting. With varicocele embolization, a small catheter inserted through the groin or neck vein is used to place a coil in the varicocele to block the entry of blood. It is a less invasive procedure compared to varicocelectomy.

Males who experience the symptoms associated with varicoceles are advised to consult their physician, or seek the advice of a vascular surgeon, such as Dr. Obinna Nwobi of Vein Health Clinics, for specialist attention.

Vein Health Clinics accepts most major insurance plans and self-pay options.
