Sydney scaffolding hire companies have reported a decline in demand for their services in 2019, inline with the slowdown of Sydney’s construction sector this year. This is not surprising considering the service relies heavily on the ongoing construction of new residential and commercial buildings, however it is another example of service businesses which have been impacted as a result of the construction recession.
Aluminium or steel scaffolding is an essential requirement for almost all construction jobs, from small homes to large shopping complexes. Construction companies rely on safe, secure scaffolding in order for their tradesmen to access all necessary construction areas, particularly at height. Over the past few years as the construction industry has boomed in Sydney – due to the symbiotic relationship of scaffolding hire & sales companies – companies who provide scaffold hire & sales have reaped the benefits.
However, it isn’t all doom & gloom for the scaffolding hire industry. While the drop in demand has resulted in fewer jobs and more competition, smart Sydney scaffolding companies have been using the situation to focus on sales & customer service training.
“It’s a bit like the real estate game,” explains Matthew Bedford – Sales Manager at Peak Scaffolding Sydney. “When the industry is booming and demand is high, you don’t tend to focus on sales or customer service – you’re just fulfilling orders. But when things slow down, it forces you to lift your game and work out better ways to market & sell your services… and improve the way you take care of your customers. Get both of those things right, and you’ve got a much better chance of winning and keeping more clients.”
Along with the decline in the construction of new homes, large infrastructure projects (which drive much of the engineering construction industry – and require significant amounts of scaffolding) were negatively impacted by the slowdown in the housing market, falling 16% in 2019.
Sydney wasn’t the only Australian city impacted this year, with Melbourne and Canberra also seeing declines in construction projects. Construction in South Australia has been on the decrease for around 12 months, with Queensland, Northern Territory & Western Australia also experiencing ongoing reduction in demand for half a year or more.
Some industry experts are predicting it take at least 10 years before the housing market returns to its previous status.
