In this time of social consciousness, Scherrer Construction realizes that a Buddy Bench could be more than a tool to help a handful of students. The company realized that buddy benches could also increase awareness of bullying, engage more students to become involved in their school and spread positive culture in the environment.
Through fundraising efforts and community support, Scherrer Construction developed Scherrer Cares, a new non-profit organization, to expand awareness regarding responsible social decision making and creating a culture change.
Buddy benches provide a safe place for students to eliminate loneliness and foster friendships that couldn’t be built otherwise. Throughout the use of buddy benches, research also found that when students have a safe place to go, it reduces or prevents bullying.
Scherrer Cares developed an annual golf fundraiser and built community support by partnering with local businesses to earn money for the buddy bench donations.
Once enough funding is raised for a specific school, the school picks its design choice, Scherrer Construction then builds the benches with the school name, color, and logo. A presentation is used to introduce the bench and how it can help the students in a time of need or when they are just feeling friendly.
After the benches are donated, each school will utilize and initiate the anti-bullying, friendship programs as they see fit.

Buddy Bench Testimonials
“Unfortunately, bullying takes place in one form or another on almost every school campus. The Buddy Bench provides a visible symbol that this type of behavior will not be tolerated and that every student has a right to a safe learning environment, both physically and emotionally, when they enter our school buildings.”
— Wayne Anderson, Williams Bay School District
“Our Buddy Bench acts as an always present visual reminder to be kind. The Buddy Bench symbolizes making good choices, being inclusive, and taking care of one another. Having the bench on our playground is one more way to remind kids to make positive choices and strengthen the school culture.”
— Brian Incitti, Turtle Creek Elementary
“Educating our students means helping create individuals who can independently think deeper, analyze, and problem-solve in both academics and social settings. These skills are crucial for their development, and for us, the buddy bench is an important piece to that intricate puzzle to help them be college and career ready, both as productive people and successful students.”
— Matt Behringer, Burlington Area School District
