A survey of 300 UK residents found that Gen Z and Millenials are more likely to dine out immediately after lockdown compared to older generations.

Younger Brits are eager to visit restaurants and pubs again and are expecting to dine out immediately after lockdown. This is according to a new survey conducted by Truly Experiences.
The study, which included 300 UK residents, was conducted through online consumer surveys to give insight into the eating and drinking out market after the COVID-19 lockdown.
The results look at the key trends affecting the market, the changing needs of consumers, and how soon restaurants and pubs in the UK can expect customers to return once their doors are opened.
The survey revealed that Gen Z and Millennials are more willing to visit their favourite pubs and restaurants immediately after lockdown. 42% of 18-24 year olds, which fall into the Gen Z category, expect to dine out immediately after lockdown, compared to just 19% for those 45 and over.
The survey also revealed that 46% of Brits expect to visit a restaurant or pub in a few weeks or months, compared to only 12% who think this will only be next year. Just 4% don’t plan on dining out all after the lockdown.
In terms of what they would need to feel comfortable to dine out again, 44% say that they would need the number of cases to be dropping, while 34% say that a vaccine would need to be available first.
The majority (63%) of the British population would feel comfortable dining out when the government says it’s okay.
This gives a glimmer of hope to the hard-hit hospitality industry. Restaurants and pubs around the nation breathed a sigh of relief after Boris Johnson’s announcement on 10 May that some sections of the hospitality industry will be allowed to reopen in July.
But customers aren’t expecting everything to go back to normal. Many are expecting restaurants to implement new measures to enforce social distancing and combat the spread of the virus.
72% of respondents said they anticipate that diners will be seated further apart, while 46% predict waiters to be wearing gloves and masks. Over half of the respondents expect there to be restrictions on group dining and 24% predict there will be temperature tests before entering the restaurant.
A reduced menu with higher-priced items is also expected by some. 21% are expecting a higher-priced menu, compared to 10% who believe prices will be lowered.
The report suggests that when restaurants in the UK re-open their doors, they may be looking at younger generations as their predominant customers. This insight is a positive finding for the British restaurant industry, with Millennials having the greatest
spending power of all the demographics. Gen Z and Millenials are also more likely to dine out at least once a week and spend more when they do.
