As more than 6 million bipolar Americans struggle to find and maintain a job in the United States, disABLEDperson, Inc. releases a new report on dealing with the mental health condition. The new report offers simple yet practical advice on managing bipolar disorder in the workplace. It says that the mental health disability should be openly discussed with one’s employer, as bipolar management is often reliant on complete transparency.
In particular, workers should refrain from working while entering their severe depressed or manic stages. While different for everyone, the warning signs of an emotional shift should be properly discussed in the workplace.
As its name suggests, bipolar disorder is characterized by the dramatic shifting of two polar emotions: depression and mania. Those with the disorder are unable to properly regulate the two emotions and enter phases where they are either depressed or manic. Though the disorder can be properly managed with regular therapy and medication, it is still not a widely understood disorder.
Scientists are still determining the vulnerabilities and indications of the disease – with some suggesting a genetic factor in the mental health disability. Regardless, bipolar disorder is now recognized as a mental illness, one that can significantly impair the quality of life of a person. It is classified as a disability and should be treated as such, argues disABLEDperson, Inc.
