Denver Child Therapy | Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program Launched

Decade2Connect (303-674-6681), a non-profit children’s mental health service provider based in Denver, Colorado, has launched a new intensive outpatient program. It is designed for children aged between 10 and 14 years and takes place after school.

Running for a period of between 9 and 12 weeks, the new program consists of three in-person meetings per week, two of which focus on the child and one on the family as a whole.

The new program is suitable for participants that are experiencing mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, difficulty in processing emotions, behavior problems, and grief or trauma.

The program uses experiential and family therapy to help combat stubborn symptoms. Experiential therapy involves learning through reflection. It gives children the opportunity to take part in various activities and reflect on and learn from these experiences afterward.

Family therapy includes services such as parent coaching, emotion-focused therapy, and psychiatry. It aims to help parents and carers provide the most effective support for their children whilst building a better understanding of any current issues.

The program refers to treatment as healing and highlights three components that are integral to recovery:

Connect2Self

This component teaches children how to connect thoughts, feelings, bodily-felt senses, and actions by learning how emotions work and how to identify them. Children develop regulation skills, tolerance skills, coping skills, self-care, and prevention skills.

Connect2Family

The aim of the second component is to connect families through positive communication and team-building exercises. It teaches parents about the importance of self-care and explains how to provide support when emotions are high.

Connect2Community

The final component focuses on how to apply learned skills to social situations outside of the family. It teaches teamwork skills and how to gain and maintain positive peer relationships whilst exploring concepts of self-respect and boundaries.

About Decade2Connect

Decade2Connect was set up in 1955 and operated as a residential treatment facility for boys (under the name Forest Heights Lodge) until 2020. Over 65 years the program has evolved nationally and internationally and has developed to include all genders and their families.

Speaking of the service, a satisfied parent stated, “Working with the Decade2Connect team really changed the dynamics of our family life. They built such a strong relationship with my son that they were able to understand the drivers of his behavior that he was unable to articulate.”
