For years marijuana enthusiasts have been looking for a cannabis emoji. A quick twitter scan will show you that someone asks for marijuana emoji almost every day. In fact, so many people on social media are looking for an emoji to use, that someone created a weed emoji twitter account to help with this question.
Emojis are created by The Unicode Consortium located in Mountain View, California. If someone wants to create a new emoji, there is an application process for this. The consortium reviews all applications, and then once a year announces which new emojis will be added. The day of this announcement is World Emoji Day. The next one will take place on Monday July 17th, 2023.
For years, people have applied for a cannabis emoji, and it has always been rejected. As weed is illegal in the most the world, it makes sense why this group does not want to create an emoji for it. This leaves people looking for alternative emojis to use instead.
After a review of social media and some targeted questions to both cannabis and emojis users, we’re concluded that the Leaf Fluttering in the Wind emoji 🍃 is the most popular emoji used for weed online.
In a vote on the subreddit r/trees (The go-to subreddit for anything and everything cannabis), 🍃 was voted the best emoji for “cannabis / smoking weed / getting high”. The vote wasn’t even close with 🍃 receiving 47% of the vote, and the next best emoji only getting 24%. With those results, it’s safe to say that 🍃 is the #1 emoji for pot smokers.
